Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Cozumel Like?

Cozumel is one of Mexico’s largest islands stretching approximately 30 mi long and 10 mi wide. It is a dream destination for snorkelers and divers, with underwater paradises such as the Palancar and Columbia coral reefs to see (Reefs of Cozumel). The island is flat and the rural areas are covered in a low jungle. There is one town- San Miguel, which faces the mainland (Yucatan Peninsula - Playa del Carmen and Cancun). The city center of San Miguel offers excellent dining, as well as activities like food tours and cooking classes to join. Cozumel is not like Cancun. It is much more laid back with still plenty to do. The “wild side” (east) of the island is undeveloped with miles of beaches and small beachfront shops and bars. There are plenty of worthwhile experiences to have in and out of the water.

Best Way To Get To Cozumel?

Cozumel has an international airport, the Cozumel International Airport (CZM). There are several direct flights to the island from the US, Canada, Mexico, and Brazil, and a number of connecting flights, as well. The condo is located 4 mi from the airport making this very convenient. Another option for getting to Cozumel is to fly to the Cancun International Airport (CUN). Cancun is a larger airport with more flights. You will need to proceed south for one hour by bus or taxi to Playa del Carmen, and then take a ferry boat to Cozumel. This is manageable but does require more effort. We would be happy to provide you with more details if interested.

Weather

The weather in Cozumel is excellent. On average you’ll enjoy sunny, slightly humid but breezy weather in the 80s (F) during the day – high 80s (F) from April to October, and lower 80s from November to March. At night, it (usually) cools off but rarely goes below 70F. (In the Winter months, I’d recommend bringing a fleece jacket and jeans, or equivalent. Basically, probably what you wore on the plane. And then you’ll likely note later that you didn’t need them…)
Like most tropical areas, there is always a chance for a brief rain shower – sometimes we get a quick hard rain, but usually it passes quickly. Still, to be safe, you should always bring a light rain jacket or poncho. The rainy season in Cozumel is typically from mid-late August through early October. This corresponds with the regional hurricane season in the Western Atlantic and Caribbean, so rain is more common, with higher totals. Rarely, though, does it rain for full days, unless a storm is moving through. Mosquitoes are also more common during this time.

Currency

Cozumel uses the Mexican Peso (MXN), and it is worth your while to exchange some money into the local currency, both for ease and often for favorable pricing. That said, the US Dollar is widely accepted. Change for large bills (whether in MXN or USD) is sometimes challenging, so best to stock up on small bills! ATMs and banks are located around town. Credit cards, Visa and Master Card, are accepted at most places with some exceptions on the “wild side” of the island and small vendors. You may want to check with your credit card for any international transaction fees.

What Is Puesta Del Sol II Like?

Puesta del Sol II is located north of the center of town offering closer proximity to the water, a laid-back quiet vibe, and a broader experience of Cozumel. Literally just outside our door are amazing views and the ocean. This gated complex consists of 14 units and a security guard on site 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Our unit is located on the entry-level floor and steps away from the pool. The pool and pool deck are for the enjoyment of residents and guests staying in the units and provides direct entry into the ocean for wonderful snorkeling. A quick taxi ride, a bike ride, or 1.5 miles walk puts you in the center of San Miguel. The town has so much to offer... lots of shopping, markets, and many amazing restaurants. Experiencing the local culture and dining out is one of the best things about Cozumel.

Is Puesta Del Sol II And Cozumel Safe?

During our travels and ownership in Cozumel, we found it safe. We have never experienced a problem, nor have we felt uncomfortable. At the Puesta del Sol II condos we have a gated facility with a security guard on duty 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Security cameras are located throughout the facility and recordings are kept. When outside the condo, we take the same precautions we would at home. We do not walk alone late at night nor leave valuables unattended or in plain sight. Petty theft, pick-pocketing and local robberies are reported sporadically, especially during low tourist season, as more local work/income opportunities decline (Aug-Sept). Bottom line, as you would anywhere – use common sense to keep your valuable belongings secured and your wits about you. Overall, it is a safe destination with a friendly, helpful, and welcoming environment. For more of our Cozumel safety tips, check out this related post, here.

What Should I Pack?

Pack light, about half of what you think you need. Cozumel is a casual island where shorts and a t-shirt work in most public settings. For more formal occasions such as a nice dinner out bring a sundress, light slacks or clean shorts, and a golf shirt. Bring sandals, a hat, bathing suits, a cover-up, and sunscreen of course. You will want to bring comfortable walking shoes as the streets are uneven. Mosquito repellent, a lightweight sweater or jacket is suggested during the winter season. Our unit has a washer and dryer as well as quick-dry towels for our guests to use. Here is a Cozumel Packing List with more tips on what to bring and not bring.
